“A POS system that offers more than just taking orders and processing payments,” says Justin Lutke Veldhuis, owner of KIR Diner x Bar in Borne. Since 2021, KIR Diner x Bar has been using the DISH POS system and the restaurant doesn’t want to go without it. Justin shares how the POS system helps relieve staff, reduce guest wait times, and contribute to higher revenue.

Improvement in communication

"With the POS system, we no longer use paper tickets, and communication between staff has improved significantly. The servers relay special requests or allergies directly via handheld devices while taking orders at the table. Previously, they had to communicate these details verbally to the kitchen staff. That’s no longer necessary, which brings much more ease for both teams."

Intuitive table layout

"Which tables have already placed orders? How many minutes ago did a colleague last serve a particular table? We can see this very clearly through colors and time indicators on the POS integrated table layout. If a table hasn’t been attended to for too long, it turns red on the screen, signaling that action is needed. The layout also helps staff navigate tables and table numbers more quickly. It’s a fantastic memory aid, especially for new team members. Additionally, merging and splitting tables, and therefore bills, is very easy with the drag and drop feature, simply by swiping with your fingers."

Inventory insights

"When entering an order, the system shows how much of each item is still available. This way, the servers can see when the daily special is almost sold out or when a particular wine from a special vintage is no longer in stock. They can advise guests accordingly and immediately inform them if something they want is unfortunately unavailable. Previously, this was only noticed once the kitchen started preparing the order, and a staff member had to be informed and return to the table. That was far from ideal. Additionally, this feature gives me insight into when I need to reorder."

Data-driven decision making

"The sales dashboard shows me real-time sales figures: the most popular dishes, the most profitable tables, and the best-selling food and drinks per staff member. This makes it easier to encourage upselling. For example, I can immediately see which employee sells desserts after a meal and how often. This allows me to guide my colleagues to also offer an after-dinner cocktail or coffee. On one hand, this is good for our revenue, but it also enhances the guest experience."

Accounting software integration

"Thanks to the integration with the accounting system, the system automatically transfers all figures and data to the accounting software every night, saving me a lot of work. If I want to export revenue data to Excel or PDF, that is also very easy."

Integration with the Bar/Kitchen Manager

"In the kitchen, we use the digital order screens of the DISH Bar/Kitchen Manager. This system works perfectly with the POS system. Every order entered via the handheld devices or fixed POS appears directly on the digital screens. The orders are always automatically displayed in the correct preparation sequence, which is especially convenient.

Additionally, it allows you to digitally monitor progress. The servers can easily request the next course digitally, or indicate that the kitchen should wait because guests are taking a smoke break. Another great feature is the VIP function, which prioritizes certain orders. For example, if a couple tells a server they only have a babysitter until 10:00 PM and would like to be served faster, the server can mark their table as 'VIP,' and that table’s order automatically moves to the front of the kitchen screen and is prepared first."

"The big advantage of DISH is that every component is very user-friendly, they integrate seamlessly with each other, and can easily be connected to external applications such as accounting software. This makes many tasks quicker, smoother, and more efficient. We don’t want to go without it anymore."
